Laziness: A Growing Lifestyle Disorder in India

 use 2025 to fix it

In today’s fast-paced world, laziness has evolved from a simple tendency to procrastinate into what some day it may called as  lifestyle disorder. It’s just no longer about occasionally putting off tasks or taking a break when you need it.

For many, it’s a consistent pattern of avoiding effort, lack of motivation, and choosing comfort over productivity.

As technology, social media, and mental health struggles shape our daily lives, laziness seems to have become ingrained in modern society with serious consequences.

It goes beyond moments of exhaustion or lack of interest it becomes a persistent way of living.

People stuck in this cycle find themselves habitually avoiding responsibilities, procrastinating on important tasks, and opting for passive, easy activities rather than engaging in the hard work necessary for growth or success.

This isn’t just about taking a few lazy days here and there it’s about  lack of motivation a pattern of avoiding effort, and a resistance to making progress in various areas of life. When laziness turns into a disorder, it holds back personal growth, damages careers, and strains relationships, impact health.

It can lead to miss opportunities and growth, both personally and professionally.

Causes of Laziness becoming as Lifestyle Disorder

  1. The Influence of Technology and Digital Distractions In today’s world, technology is often a major culprit. We live in an age of constant notifications, endless entertainment, and instant gratification. Whether it’s scrolling through social media or binge-watching TV shows, technology provides a constant distraction. Instead of focusing on important tasks, many people find themselves mindlessly scrolling or diving into entertainment, losing hours in the process. This addiction to screens has become a barrier to productivity.

  2. A Lack of Clear Goals or Purpose People who don’t have clear goals or a sense of purpose are more prone to laziness. Without something specific to work toward, it’s easy to fall into a state of inertia. If there’s no reason to get up and push forward, tasks can feel overwhelming or meaningless. A lack of direction leaves people drifting through their daily lives with no real motivation to take action.

  3. The Comfort of Instant Gratification We live in a world where everything is available at the push of a button. Whether it's food, entertainment, or social connections, we can satisfy almost any need instantly. This has led to a culture of instant gratification, where effort is seen as unnecessary or even undesirable. Why bother working hard when you can easily access comfort and pleasure without any effort?

  4. Poor Time Management Skills A lack of organization and poor time management skills can fuel laziness. Without structure, it’s easy to put things off and allow tasks to pile up. Procrastination often occurs when people feel overwhelmed by what’s ahead, and without a strategy for managing their time, they can end up procrastinating endlessly.

How to Overcome Laziness as a Lifestyle Disorder

Note: there is no instant pill to overcome this disorder and its not a disease just a disorder which can be made into order.

While laziness may seem like an overwhelming habit, it’s possible to break free from it with the right approach. Here are some practical ways to overcome it:

  1. Set Clear and Achievable Goals The first step in overcoming laziness is to set specific, attainable goals. Instead of vague resolutions like “be more productive,” aim for concrete objectives like “finish the report by Friday” or “exercise for 30 minutes every day.” Breaking down large goals into smaller, manageable tasks can make them feel less intimidating, and completing these tasks one by one provides a sense of accomplishment that fuels further action.

  2. Establish a Structured Routine Having a daily routine is one of the best ways to combat laziness. Routines reduce decision fatigue, helping you stay on track and accomplish your tasks with minimal effort. Set aside time each day for work, rest, and personal activities. A routine gives your day structure, which in turn helps your mind stay focused and motivated.

  3. Limit Distractions In a world full of distractions, it’s essential to create an environment that supports focus. This might mean turning off notifications on your phone, using apps to block distracting websites, or setting aside specific times for checking social media. By limiting distractions, you can focus more on your tasks and reduce the temptation to procrastinate.

  4. Take Care of Your Health It’s also important to practice self-care, whether that means getting enough sleep, eating well, or engaging in activities that help reduce stress.

  5. Start Small and Build Momentum Trying to do everything at once can be overwhelming, leading to more procrastination. Instead, start small. Take one simple action today whether it’s sending an email, organizing a corner of your desk, or taking a short walk. The key is to create momentum, and once you get started, you’ll likely find it easier to keep going.

  6. Find Accountability Having someone to hold you accountable can be a powerful motivator. Share your goals with a friend or colleague who can check in on your progress. Knowing that someone else is aware of your objectives and will follow up with you can encourage you to stay on track and avoid falling back into lazy habits.

The Benefits of Overcoming Laziness

Breaking free from the grip of laziness offers several long-term benefits:

  1. Increased Productivity Once laziness is overcome, productivity naturally improves. Tasks that once felt difficult become easier to tackle, and you’ll find yourself accomplishing more in less time. This productivity boosts your confidence and encourages a cycle of action.

  2. Better Health Laziness often comes hand in hand with a lack of physical activity. Overcoming this lifestyle disorder means incorporating regular movement into your day, which has immense benefits for your physical health. Mentally, taking action and seeing progress can also significantly improve your mood and reduce stress levels.

  3. Personal and Career Growth When you stop avoiding challenges and start taking proactive steps toward your goals, you create opportunities for personal and professional growth. Tackling tasks head-on will allow you to learn new skills, advance in your career, and build better habits.

  4. Improved Relationships Laziness can strain relationships, whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues. When you take initiative, fulfill commitments, and contribute more actively to shared responsibilities, you strengthen trust and communication. This can lead to healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

  5. Greater Sense of Fulfillment The ultimate reward for overcoming laziness is the deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from knowing you are living a purposeful, productive life. By taking control of your actions and reaching your goals, you cultivate a lasting sense of pride and contentment.

why awareness is important & habits and ego has to be fixed before age 50

my personal experience and observation while living and taking care for family member who were and are in senior citizen and super senior citizen category.

ego is greatest enemy and blocker for knowledge seeking for self and it has to be given attention at early stage of our life and reviewed so that awareness comes as soon as this gets build.

habits formed before 50 will get reflected out in auto pilot mode after 50 hence its very very important to make sure we build healthy habits in terms of living, eating, relationships, mobility, self care, active and positive approach,  realization of higher energy powers than we humans.

ego exist in each one of us whether its knowledge, experiences, wealth, power but how much we are aware about it is the thing we need to give attention towards it so this formation of ego cloud doesn't form as a habit and can be killed as soon as it gets build.

awareness is the greatest tool in our mind this helps a lot while living our life and identify certain problems this is something AI can't find or fix.

learning should never be stopped even if we are not getting desired outcome or result and this is something AI can support us.

power of simple act: Journaling

how journaling can benefit you and your family a better tomorrow

its OK if you are not sharing your experiences on LinkedIn or any other networking platforms its absolutely fine.

but its NOT OK if you are not doing it for self and your family and friends.

how about if our parents and generations before had scripted their experiences of personal life / profession  / problems and shared with us as we were growing.

how about getting to know about the history of own family may be they had a better living management and habits than today which got lost while the generation were shaping their dreams into reality ?

Do you think it would have helped you to deal with problems / achievements / failures  better which they have already experiences and found a solution ? or it could have helped to find a better solution ?

if your answer is YES then you need to start journaling your experiences.

we all remember major failures / achievements in our life when it hits us but do we remember minor issues / small achievements of our past decade and what lesson it has shaped us?

if your answer is NO then you need to start journaling your experiences.

impact of journaling is so powerful that even today stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata which took thousands of years ago is still influencing today.

we may not live so long but our experiences can if you start documenting them.

your documented journal it may or may not be so powerful to influence the world but it will be enough to shape a better tomorrow for you and your close ones whom you share with.

when you start reading your own journals it helps to realize what problems / changes / achievements / failures have shaped your present which indeed influences you towards making it more better and compound it.

you will laugh a lot as well while reading your own journals when you find some part of act in your journey where so stupid.

A generation of family never talked about how to manage and maintain relationships  with frnds /  family / partners / customers  / colleagues and we learned through our own experiences.

Every generation in family history must have same experience and found solution for it but it was never shared out in the journey of busy life what if you missed this part as well going forward ? a simple act of journaling could help to deal with known problems better.

journaling also shapes better finance management for you and your family it helps you to understand certain expenses that are meaningless / why certain investment didn't meet the desired directional outcome / what are the right asset class where investment should be made to meet the goal associated with it.

it also helps you understand what direction your professional career is heading towards and what action you need to take further for example is it giving you the satisfaction  or is it just helping to maintain living expenses.

it helps you to manage your health better when you journal your health problems it forces you to think how to overcome it or what changes needs to be applied to resolve repetitive health problems rather suppressing it with tablets.

so start writing for yourself a simple tool to do quantitative analysis of your life journey.

it's important to allocate some time for this tool its not necessary it should be daily or  weekly.

it can be done monthly / quarterly  as well what's  more important is it needs to be placed in practice.

Morning Routine And its Importance

For most of us, mornings can be a stressful and hectic time. Rushing to get ready for work or school, getting stuck in traffic, and facing the challenges of the day ahead can be overwhelming.

my morning used to start always by 8 or 9 am even during childhood and graduation days.

but it was a forced change in 2013 when I had to get up by 5:45 AM as my work location during this time was far away which took me around two n half hour of travel.

This was a time when the buzzword 'remote work' did not yet exist

however this routine was more related to be readiness for work.

while commuting to work, just thought to use the time and started reading books and blogs on various topics.

since my body clock didn't change on weekend started cultivating jogging on weekend as my morning routine followed by hydrating the body with coconut water.

what happen next after around 1 yr of this routine ?

the focus towards work was changed  started observing out thing in more detail

the body was automatically energetic and light

the connect towards nature was changed

the connect towards food was changed craving for junk food decreased and also started to keep the timing of food intake strict.

I left the organization by 2015 while morning pattern become a normal routine even today with some more additional adjustments.

weekdays included a daily exercise for 20 min   + change in eating patterns and weekend was focused toward jogging / cycling / walking.

reading routine brought another change of thoughts and value towards life and people.

2020 we all got hit by COVID - adding some turbulence on morning routine  of exercise and reading from daily routine it moved to weekly and then monthly since allotment of time was changed.

this also taught me that it's not easy to manage a home.

but it also led me to cultivate a habit of meditation  and realizing I had tons of monkey thoughts running.

this habit is now helping to clean this tons of thoughts and make it more focused.

This journey is improving day by day, and  was able to bring back my basic morning routine.

Once restrictions lifted after COVID, added one more step to my routine and started walking while chanting, which I named 'walking meditation'

why this story is now shared after a decade ?

to help others seekers who are looking to bring some change in their habit and not give up since none of such routine gets cultivated in a flash of time.

it takes years to build step by step adding one by one turning habit into discipline approach of living which now doesn't requires any motivation to follow it.

such routine also bring a lot of changes in approach towards people / society / how you associate with your work / life and many factors which can be felt through this journey......
