N Chandrasekaran's decade-long stewardship of Tata Sons is coming to a close. He'll stay on until his term ends in February 2027, but he has already told the board he won't seek reappointment closing one of the most transformative chapters in the group's history.
Naturally, the market's attention has turned to who succeeds him at Tata Sons. But there's a second, less-discussed question worth asking: what does Chandra do next?
Here's a speculative thesis with no inside information to back it worth putting on the table.
Through late 2025 and into 2026, Chandra has reportedly engaged with the Finance Ministry and RBI on matters connected to turbulence within the Tata Group board.
Was there any other discussion on the table more than just Tata group for him?
Around the same window period, another systemically important institution has been going through its own leadership turbulence since late 2025: HDFC Bank, following the abrupt resignation of its part-time chairman earlier this year and the governance questions that followed.
Banks and large NBFCs are the backbone of India's economic growth. Regulators won't let a bank as big as HDFC go too long without stable, trustworthy leadership the risk isn't just to the bank, it's to the whole system.
If there's no conflict-of-interest issue on the regulatory side, a figure with Chandra's track record of running large, complex organizations with credibility intact could reasonably be in the conversation for chair person role in HDFC.
To be clear: this is pure speculation, not a prediction backed by any confirmed information. Worth watching, not worth betting on.
Note: My view can be biased as well since I hold HDFC bank equity.
